Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is a procedure designed to give patients a flat, toned stomach. Many people want to achieve this goal. However, despite a proper diet and regular exercise, it can be difficult, if not impossible, to get rid of excess skin and belly fat and regain a toned muscle wall. Abdominoplasty is one of the many techniques offered by cosmetic surgery to improve body curves and give patients a dynamic, harmonious figure.

Presentation

Abdominoplasty : what does it involve?

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that tightens the muscles of the abdomen (called diastasis cure of the rectus abdominis muscles) and removes excess fat and skin. Most of the time, this procedure is accompanied by liposuction to enhance the underlying anatomy. Revealed abdominal muscles can be enhanced with lipomodelling using the RAFT (Rectus Abdominis Fat Transfer) reinjection technique.

This operation is ideal for those seeking to regain a toned abdomen after significant body changes.

The result is a smooth, flat abdomen, a slimmer waistline and a more harmonious silhouette.

Indications

Do I qualify?

With age, following pregnancy or sudden weight changes, the muscles and skin of the abdomen become relaxed and slack. This sagging skin and muscle often only partially responds to sport and/or dieting.

This sagging is often accompanied by excess fat and the appearance of stretch marks, and does not improve with exercise, diet or skin care.

Abdominoplasty is therefore an effective solution for restoring a firm abdomen and a more youthful silhouette.

Preparation

Preparing for your abdominoplasty?

Before undergoing abdominoplasty, several precautions are necessary to ensure the safety and success of the procedure :

  • A thorough medical evaluation is essential to determine whether you are a good candidate for this procedure. During the pre-operative consultation, your surgeon will analyze your general health, medical history, and expectations
  • It is strongly recommended that you stop smoking at least six weeks before and after surgery to promote proper healing
  • Certain medications (aspirin, anticoagulants…) must be stopped on medical advice before surgery to reduce the risk of bleeding
  • It is advisable to have a BMI of less than 30 and a stable weight before the operation (for more than 6 months). Weight variations can affect the results of the operation. A healthy lifestyle will also help recovery. Abdominoplasty will not treat excess visceral fat
Technique

Choosing the Right Technique

Full Tummy Tuck (with umbilical transposition or classical abdominoplasty)

Classical abdominoplasty removes the skin and fat between the navel and pubic bone. The abdominal muscles are tightened (diastasis cure) and the belly button is brought out through a small incision to restore the natural appearance. The entire abdomen, from the lower chest down to the pubis, is tightened. This procedure is often combined with liposuction to reduce fatty deposits and considerably improve the final result. Muscle lipomodelling using RAFT techniques may also be performed.

Mini Tummy Tuck

For those with only excess fat or sagging skin below the navel, mini-abdominoplasty is the option of choice. Less complex and quicker to perform, it reduces scarring (Caesarean section type or only slightly larger) and recovery.

Hybrid Tummy Tuck

Hybrid abdominoplasty is indicated for treating excess skin and fat below the belly button, while tightening the muscular webbing of the rectus abdominis (diastasis cure) via a small incision above the pubis (more or less extensive Caesarean section). The belly button is detached and reinserted 1-3 cm lower, depending on your morphology.

Reverse Tummy Tuck

Reverse abdominoplasty is indicated when sagging is mainly located in the upper abdomen, between the breasts and the navel. By means of a scar under the breasts, it tightens the skin of the upper abdomen without altering the location of the umbilicus. The tension is therefore from the bottom to the top of the body, unlike a conventional tummy tuck, hence the name “inverted”.

Fleur-de-Lys Tummy Tuck

Fleur-de-Lys abdominoplasty is indicated to correct an abdominal wall that, in addition to having vertical excess, also has circular excess. When there is massive weight loss, the upper part of the abdomen may exhibit such skin laxity that traditional abdominoplasty cannot tighten with a vertical vector. In this situation, a vertical scar is associated with the traditional abdominoplasty.

RibXcar Technique

If you wish to refine your waist, you may be a candidate for rib remodeling. The RibXcar technique involves reshaping the ribs without a scar, guided by ultrasound. To permanently slim the silhouette, this new rib remodeling technique no longer requires the removal of a rib. Surgeons at Leman Aesthetic redefine your costal angle by performing a monocortical fracture of the ribs (C10-11-12) under ultrasound control, minimizing risks and scarring.

Procedure

Procedure for a tummy tuck at Leman Aesthetic Clinic

Tummy Tuck procedures at Leman Aesthetic Clinic are performed under general anesthesia or possibly sedation. Depending on the chosen technique, the procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis or require one to two nights of hospital stay for comfort. A work stoppage is recommended for a duration of 10 to 15 days for a mini Tummy Tuck and 2 to 4 weeks for a traditional Tummy Tuck.

Recovery

Recovery after abdominoplasty

Recovery after a Tummy tuck depend on the extent of the procedure. It is common for the surgeon to use drains to facilitate the evacuation of body fluids and promote healing. These are removed before your discharge. The first dressing is applied the day after the procedure, followed by wound checks at 1 and 2 weeks. It is recommended to wear a compression garment day and night for the first 4-6 weeks. Lymphatic drainage sessions are usually prescribed by your surgeons. A rest period of 2 to 4 weeks is typically necessary. Resumption of sports activities is allowed two months after the abdominal surgery.

Results

What results can you expect after a Tummy Tuck?

Tummy Tuck brings a significant improvement in the firmness and appearance of your abdomen. The results offer a flatter belly, a reduction in excess skin and fat, and a more sculpted and harmonious silhouette. Scars are placed to be hidden by underwear or swimwear.

Final results are evaluated 3 to 6 months after the procedure, once the swelling has completely subsided.
