Breast Augmentation with Implants

Breast implants are medical devices used to increase breast volume and enhance the appearance of the breasts. They are used in cosmetic surgery to modify the size, shape, and balance of the bust. There is a wide range of breast implant models available. Combined with different surgical techniques, they offer every woman the possibility of achieving a harmonious, natural silhouette that matches her expectations.

Presentation

What is a breast implant?

An internal breast prosthesis, or breast implant, is a medical device consisting of a soft shell and a filling material. The shell is made of a silicone elastomer, while the filling is mostly medical-grade silicone. A wide variety of materials, shapes, and fillings makes it possible to adapt to each patient’s specific needs. Breast implants are strictly regulated (CE marking, etc.) to ensure their safety and effectiveness.

Indications

Indications for breast augmentation with implants

Breast implants are intended for women with small breasts (breast hypoplasia) or those wishing to achieve a more balanced silhouette. They are also used in cases of congenital asymmetry or for breast reconstruction after breast cancer. They can also restore breast volume lost after breastfeeding or significant weight loss. They are especially indicated for patients who are not candidates for purely autologous augmentation.

Types

The different types of breast implants

Several types of breast implants are available. The choice is made together with your surgeon and is based on various criteria:

  • Shape: ergonomic (round, drop-shaped) for a natural look; round implants that fill out the cleavage perfectly. Anatomical implants are currently discouraged due to the risk of rotation and their macro-texture, which can cause chronic inflammation
  • Volume: adapted to the patient’s wishes and body shape (variation in diameter and implant projection)
  • Shell: smooth or nano-textured silicone for a natural breast movement and better bio-integration; micro-textured silicone for a more stable implant position; polyurethane coating to limit the risk of rotation
  • Filling material: silicone gives a natural feel and uses a cohesive gel that does not leak; saline solution is now used less frequently because it is less durable and less effective
Preparation

How to prepare for breast implant surgery

Breast implant placement is preceded by two preoperative consultations at Leman Aesthetic Clinic. During the first appointment, your surgeon will assess your breasts, your needs, and your goals. A personalized treatment plan will be proposed, and a detailed estimate provided. You can also try out different volumes using sizers and benefit from a 3D simulation giving you a precise preview of the expected result.
After a reflection period, you will have a second appointment to receive all information and recommendations for your surgery.

Anticoagulant medications must be stopped under medical advice. Aspirin and NSAIDs should be avoided 10 days before surgery to reduce the risk of bleeding.

You will be asked to obtain prescribed medications for postoperative care. A suitable medical bra will be provided.

You will receive a preparation protocol with all pre- and post-operative instructions (showering, what to bring, fasting times, etc.).

Procedure

Breast implant surgery: how does the procedure take place at Leman Aesthetic Clinic?

There are different surgical techniques for placing breast implants. They vary according to the position of the implant (in front of or behind the pectoral muscle), the location of the incision (inframammary, axillary, periareolar), and the initial breast anatomy. Our surgeons will explain the advantages and disadvantages of each technique and help you choose the one best suited to your case.

In general, the procedure follows the same steps. The surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. You arrive the morning of the operation and leave the clinic the same day. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and lasts 1 to 2 hours. You will leave the operating room with a shaping bandage. Once you have recovered from the anesthesia, you may go home. Sometimes, depending on the extent of the procedure, an overnight stay or the placement of drains may be necessary.

Postoperative

Postoperative recovery after breast implant surgery

Recovery after breast augmentation with implants is marked by pain of varying intensity, depending on the patient. The size and position of the implant influence this intensity. The pain is temporary and gradually subsides within a few days. Appropriate pain medication is always prescribed.

Swelling and bruising are common. They are harmless and usually disappear on their own within one to two weeks. The first dressing change is done a few days after surgery. A light dressing must then be changed regularly until complete healing. Wearing a compression bra day and night is recommended for 6 weeks. To ensure optimal recovery, plan for 5 to 10 days of rest and avoid sports activities for 1 to 2 months.

Risks

Are there risks of complications after breast implant surgery?

Performed by experienced, qualified medical professionals, complications after breast implant placement are rare. Risks are those inherent to any surgical procedure under general anesthesia. Specific complications related to breast surgery include:

  • Hematoma, sometimes requiring reoperation
  • Altered sensitivity
  • Implant malposition
  • Infection
  • Poor wound healing
  • Pneumothorax

The vast majority of postoperative courses following breast implant placement are uncomplicated. In the event of a complication, your surgeon will provide appropriate treatment.

What is the lifespan of a breast implant and what are the long-term risks?

Breast implants have greatly evolved over time, making today’s implants very safe and reliable. In the past, it was recommended to replace breast implants after 10 years due to risks of:

  • Implant rupture
  • Capsular contracture (capsule formation)

Today, these risks have significantly decreased, which is why we now simply recommend monitoring the implants with an ultrasound 5 years after placement, and then every 2 to 3 years. This recommendation may change as medical knowledge advances.

Results

What results can you expect after breast implant surgery?

Breast augmentation with implants achieves very satisfying results. Patients achieve a natural-looking bust with very discreet scars. The many options allow each woman to obtain a harmonious silhouette that matches her desires. The aesthetic improvement is accompanied by significant psychological benefits, increasing well-being and quality of life.
