It offers both women and men a more harmonious body image, in line with their expectations.

Presentation

What is nipple and areola surgery?

Nipple and areola surgery aims to improve the proportions of this central part of the breast. It encompasses a number of procedures designed to reshape the nipple and/or areola when they are too discreet or, on the contrary, too imposing. Ageing, pregnancy, weight changes and genetics can all influence nipple aesthetics. This branch of breast surgery offers the possibility of correcting these imperfections. In particular, nipple size, symmetry and shape can be modified.

Indications

Nipple and areola surgery: what are the indications?

There are many problems that may require surgery of the areola and nipple. The presence of flat or invaginated nipples makes the breast-feeding process very difficult and detracts from the aesthetic appearance of the breasts. At the other extreme, very large (hypertrophic) nipples are also a source of complex, being too obvious through clothing.

Finally, reconstruction of the areola-nipple complex (PAM) after mastectomy or trauma is the finishing touch that will restore the natural appearance of the reconstructed breast. If the areola is too large or asymmetrical, surgical solutions are also available.

Recovery

Recovery from surgery

Post-operative recovery is painless. Swelling and bruising are moderate. Follow-up is essential a few days after surgery, to ensure that healing is progressing well. We recommend that you lie on your back, slightly elevated if possible. It is strictly inadvisable to lie on your stomach for the first few days.

You can resume sporting activities 2-4 weeks after the operation.

It is advisable to wait 6 months before considering pregnancy, so that the definitive shape of the nipple is stable and the milk ducts have had time to heal.

Risks

Risks of nipple and areola surgery?

Infections occur very rarely during nipple and areola surgery. They are controlled by local care and antibiotics. Transient loss of sensitivity may also occur. Finally, in certain types of surgery, part of the milk ducts is cut. This may mean that you can no longer breastfeed. If you are planning to breastfeed after nipple surgery, discuss this with your plastic surgeon. Other options that preserve the milk ducts are also possible.
