Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is an aesthetic eyelid surgery. It is a simple, quick, and very effective procedure. Correcting under-eye bags or excess skin on the upper eyelid (dermatochalasis) allows for an instant rejuvenation and an opening of the eyes. It provides very natural results and gives the entire face a dynamic and lively appearance.

Presentation

Blepharoplasty: what is it?

Aesthetic eyelid surgery is called blepharoplasty. It can involve the upper and/or lower eyelids.
In some cases, these procedures can be accompanied by an additional procedure to correct drooping eyebrows, true drooping eyelids (ptosis), or to improve wrinkles around the eyelids (crow’s feet). This results in a more rested and attractive appearance.

Upper Blepharoplasty

Upper blepharoplasty is a surgery aimed at improving the aesthetic appearance of the upper eyelids by removing excess skin and/or reshaping the surrounding fatty tissues.
The fatty tissues of the upper eyelid can be excessive due to congenital factors (heavy eyelids), aging (fat pad above the inner canthus of the eye), or ptosis of the lacrimal gland. Conversely, the fatty tissues may be lacking, creating a hollow-eye appearance that can be unflattering and may require lipofilling to conceal the bony contours. More rarely, there may be true ptosis of the free edge of the upper eyelid, giving the eye a smaller and asymmetrical look. In such cases, ptosis correction is recommended during the same procedure.
However, in the vast majority of cases, upper blepharoplasty is limited to addressing excess skin.

It is common to see, with aging, the appearance of a fat pad inside the upper eyelid or a drooping upper eyelid. Whether the ptosis is congenital or due to skin aging, the procedure involves removing the excess skin to lift the eyelid and rejuvenate the gaze. This quick and simple operation is performed through an incision in the eyelid crease, usually under local anesthesia.

Lower Blepharoplasty

Lower blepharoplasty corrects imperfections located under the eye, which can give a tired or sad appearance. It involves removing the fat pockets that gradually settle under the eyes and tightening the skin to reduce the hollow of the dark circles. It is often combined with filling the dark circles, either by transposition or fat transfer (lipofilling).
The procedure can be performed through an internal trans-conjunctival approach or an external sub-ciliary approach to remove excess skin. Surgery on the lower eyelid is more complex than that on the upper eyelid. Sometimes, it is necessary to improve the tone or shape of the lower eyelid by modifying the external canthus through a canthopexy or canthoplasty.

This procedure is suitable for anyone wishing to improve the aesthetics of the eye contour and face, resulting in a more open and joyful look. Blepharoplasty is recommended for patients with excess eyelid skin, pronounced dark circles, or bags under the eyes. Also known as an eye lift, it is the go-to operation for rejuvenating the eyes from the age of 35.

Recovery

Your recovery after a Blepharoplasty

The postoperative course of an eyelid cosmetic surgery is not painful. A feeling of tightness and sometimes eye irritation may cause discomfort in the first few days. Swelling and bruising are always present postoperatively. They are harmless and typically resolve on their own in about a week.
No nursing care is required after the procedure. The patient performs simple wound cleaning daily. During the postoperative consultation, around the sixth day, your surgeon will remove the stitches. You can resume your professional and social activities after 7 to 10 days.

Results

Expected results after a Blepharoplasty

The results of blepharoplasty are very satisfying. They become fully appreciable after one month when the swelling and bruising have completely subsided. The scars are pinkish during the first few weeks. Makeup, which is allowed from the 7th day, helps to conceal them. This true eyelid lift brings back cheerfulness, dynamism, and attractiveness to the eyes. The area around the eyes is smoothed, giving the face a refreshed and youthful appearance.
