Breast reconstruction
Unfortunately, breast cancer is becoming an increasingly common disease. Breast reconstruction is an integral part of the management of this pathology, particularly after non-conservative breast surgery. The surgeons at Leman Aesthetic Clinic offer patients a range of surgical techniques, from the most innovative to the most tried-and-tested, to give every woman back her harmonious breasts.
Definition of breast reconstruction
Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure designed to recreate the shape and appearance of the breast after a mastectomy (total removal of the breast) or lumpectomy (partial removal of the breast). This surgery plays a crucial role in the psychological and physical recovery of patients, enabling them to regain a harmonious figure and boost their self-esteem.
This surgery has progressed enormously and is one of the most gratifying surgeries, both for the patient and the surgeon.
Why undergo breast reconstruction ?
Breast reconstruction enables patients who have suffered from breast cancer to regain their body image and their symbol of femininity. Whether after complete or partial removal of the breast, reconstruction can always be considered. Whenever possible, reconstruction is performed at the same time as removal of the tumor (called primary or immediate reconstruction). However, depending on the treatment modalities chosen to treat the cancer, secondary or delayed reconstruction may be considered or preferred.
Breast reconstruction: what techniques are available and recognized?
There are two main types of breast reconstruction to restore the shape of a breast. On the one hand, we talk about reconstruction using silicone implants, and on the other, reconstruction using your own tissue or autologous flap (DIEP, Grand-dorsal, PAP, Gracilis, lipofilling…). The DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator flap) is recognized as the standard autologous reconstruction technique for women with a favorable tummy.
During a consultation at Leman Aesthetic Clinic, your surgeon will evaluate your entire diseased breast (skin envelope and residual volume) as well as the contralateral breast.
Depending on your morphology and the breast to be reconstructed, we will opt for one or other surgical technique.
Breast reconstruction: how is surgery performed at Leman Aesthetic Clinic?
At Leman Aesthetic Clinic, breast reconstruction is meticulously planned and customized to each patient’s needs. Here’s how the process typically unfolds :
- Pre-operative consultation: a detailed assessment is carried out to choose the most suitable reconstruction method. The surgeon explains the different options, the stages of the procedure, and the expected results
- Preparation: During a second consultation, the patient confirms her choice. The doctor gives specific instructions to be followed before the procedure, such as recommendations on diet and medication
- Surgery: Surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Hospitalization varies from 1 to 5 days, depending on the type of operation. A convalescence period of 10 to 21 days is to be expected
Oncoplastic surgery or lipofilling (gland remodeling)
- Duration: 1-2 hours
- Anaesthesia: General

- Time off work: 10-14 days
Breast reconstruction with implant/expander
- Duration: 1.5-3 hours
- Anesthesia: General

Recovery from breast reconstruction
Post-operative recovery from breast reconstruction varies according to the method used. The first few days are marked by pain and fatigue. The time spent in hospital allows for the administration and adaptation of analgesic treatment, and for complete rest. On discharge, it is essential to follow the surgeon’s post-operative advice to ensure proper healing and avoid complications. Compression garments may be recommended to support the reconstructed breast. Resumption of daily activities is gradual, with a return to work generally possible two to three weeks after surgery.
Results of breast reconstruction
The results of breast reconstruction are usually very satisfactory, offering patients a harmonious silhouette and a significant improvement in their quality of life and well-being. The final result depends on a number of factors, including the quality of the skin and tissues that may have been damaged by prior surgery or adjuvant radiotherapy. In some cases, adjustments or touch-ups may be necessary to optimize the result (symmetrization procedures, lipomodelling, MAP reconstruction, etc.).
